Academic Plan of Study

Academic Advising and Plan of Study

Introduction and Academic Goals

My major is Statistical Science in Volgenau School of Engineering. It concentrates on transforming information into data to analyze. In graduate program, students are required to take 30 credits for master’s degrees. It includes 12 credits of core courses that students must complete, 12 credits of methodology courses and 6 credits of electives. Grades of B- or better are required in two of the core courses: Applied Probability and Applied Statistics I.

What’s more, students can also select either the professional or research option. The former focuses on completing coursework in modern statistical theory and practice; while the latter can be regarded as 6 credits that must be in independent research (thesis). But I choose the professional option; and I will take STAT 634 (Case Studies in Data Analysis) and OR 645 (Stochastic Processes) as my elective courses. Because I am interested in these courses and they will help me the further study and career.

During my pathway graduate study, I have 3 academic goals. First, I want to meet every requirement in courses so that I can finish my pathway study on time. Second, I will prepare my graduate study in my major by learning basic skills in statistics. Third, I will try my best to gain higher education and find a good internship in advance.

Academic Adviser

I am a graduate pathway student in INTO George Mason, and my pathway advisor is James B Jones (jjones12@gmu.edu). In the pathway program, my major requires that students’ grade should be at least B in every courses and GPA should higher than 3.0. So I plan to complete my courses to meet these requirements that I can enter the graduate study in George Mason University. Thus, I think I will have an appointment with my advisor every semester to make sure that I will complete my study well. If I have any problem about my study during my semester, I will also ask my advisor for help.
